A lifeline for injured wildlife across Central Victoria
Founded by Nikki Hansen out of her deep commitment to kangaroo welfare, the Red Box Wildlife and Veterinary Centre exists so that no injured native animal in our region is turned away simply because no one can afford it.
Real medical care, once a month, at no cost
Once a month, Senior Veterinary Surgeon Dr Mark Sayer travels to Red Box Wildlife Shelter to assess and treat animals in need, supported throughout the day by veterinary student Tom and a team of dedicated volunteers.
Our fully equipped surgical suite and professional imaging equipment allow the team to carry out everything from x-rays to full surgical procedures giving injured wildlife access to a genuine standard of veterinary care.
Not just for our own animals
The clinic isn’t limited to Red Box’s own animals. If you’re caring for an injured kangaroo, wombat or native bird in need of veterinary attention, always reach out to Nikki by email first, she’ll assess whether we’re able to help and, if so, add the animal to the schedule for the next clinic day.
Just outside the clinic, a small supply station is also available for other shelters and carers to take essential items free of charge, bottle teats, bandages, disinfectant and other everyday care supplies.

Wildlife shelters do vital work, often on very limited budgets. That’s why every treatment at Red Box Wildlife and Veterinary Centre from a routine check-up to major surgery is provided at no cost. This is entirely thanks to Nikki Hansen, whose dedication to the wellbeing of kangaroos has shaped everything the shelter stands for.

How often is the vet on site?
Dr Mark Sayer visits once a month to assess and treat animals, supported by his assistant and volunteers throughout the day.

Yes, the day’s schedule is organised ahead of time, so please get in touch before bringing an animal in.
